Support Our Mission

Legal aid is a vital thread in the safety net protecting people living with low-incomes in New Hampshire. There are never enough staff to meet the need for civil legal aid: recent surveys showed there is less than one legal aid attorney for every 10,000 people in New Hampshire who need legal aid. Your gift of cash, stock, securities or other assets supports our advocates who protect people’s basic human needs and make justice a reality in New Hampshire every day. Learn more about supporting this critical work, or make a gift to ensure more people have access to justice, at nh-cls.org

To discuss gifts of stock or securities, or to discuss recognizing legal aid in your estate plan, contact Sarah Palermo, Director of the NH Campaign for Legal Services, at 603-369-6650.

Jobs at NHLA

NHLA is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to building a diverse staff that reflects the communities of low-income and older (age 60 plus) people NHLA works alongside, and we value equity and inclusion in our workplace. NHLA actively seeks applications from Black people, Indigenous people, people of color, people of diverse national origin, the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities, older adults, veterans, people who have lived experience with poverty, and other people belonging to communities that have historically experienced injustice.

Internships at NHLA

NHLA Legal Aid Internships

Each year NHLA hosts law students as legal aid interns who assist attorneys and paralegals with every level of case preparation including:

  • interviewing clients,

  • investigating cases,

  • taking depositions,

  • conducting legal research, and

  • drafting pleadings.

Interns are encouraged to participate in administrative hearings and second year students who meet NH student practice qualifications may represent clients in District Court proceedings.

Because NHLA accepts only a small number of legal interns each year, interns have the opportunity to work on a wide array of cases. NHLA’s legislative efforts afford interested interns the opportunity to conduct legislative tracking and analysis on key poverty issues before the state legislature.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but students are strongly encouraged to apply early each academic year for summer positions. Summer interns receive a stipend of $2,500 and may be eligible for further compensation through work-study programs, in which NHLA is happy to participate. Students are encouraged to apply for academic year internships for academic credit as well; these for-credit internships are not paid.

To apply for a legal internship at NHLA, please submit a cover letter and resume to:
